What Happened To Bryan Abreu?

Baseball pitcher Bryan Enrique Abreu was born on April 22, 1997, in the Dominican Republic. He now plays for the Houston Astros in Major League Baseball. As a foreign free agent in 2013, Abreu signed with the Astros. He made his main league debut in July 2019.

Abreu signed a contract with the Houston Astros in November 2013 after becoming an unrestricted international free agency. He made his professional debut in 2014 with the Astros of the Dominican Summer League, going 0-2 with a 6.55 ERA in 22 innings from the bullpen.

He threw to a 2-2 record and 3.83 ERA in his first 14 games back in the DSL in 2015. (ten starts). He began the 2016 campaign with the Greeneville Astros before being moved to the Gulf Coast League’s Astros. In 38.2 innings, he had a 2-5 record and a 4.89 ERA.



In 2018, he pitched for the Quad Cities River Bandits and the Tri-City ValleyCats, with a 6-1 record and 1.49 ERA in 14 contests. In 2017, he went back to Greeneville and played eight games, going 1-3 with a 7.98 ERA.

The Astros added Abreu to their 40-man roster following the 2018 season.

Prior to being promoted to the Corpus Christi Hooks, the team for which he was chosen as a Texas League All-Star, he began the 2019 campaign with the Fayetteville Woodpeckers.

On July 31, 2019, the Astros promoted Abreu to the major leagues. He made his major league debut that night, pitching an inning in relief and keeping scoreless.

The next day, he was optioned back to Double-A Corpus Christi. Abreu walked seven batters and struck out two during the course of 3.1 innings before being optioned off the team in 2020 due to poor accuracy.

Late in the month of May, Abreu had a calf injury and was placed on the injured list. On June 26, he started a rehab assignment with Triple-A Sugar Land, where he ended up making four appearances and surrendering one run across four innings while striking out six batters.
