The Cincinnati Reds chose him in the 13th round of the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft, but he did not sign. Boyd was taken in the sixth round of the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft by the Blue Jays and got a $75,000 signing bonus.

He received the loss after pitching 62/3 innings against the Rangers, allowing 4 runs while striking out 7. Boyd struck out seven batters in his debut, tying the team record for strikeouts in a debut.
Despite pitching 6.2 innings for the Blue Jays in 2015 (who advanced to the ALDS), the team decided not to grant Boyd any money from the available postseason share monies.
