Major League Baseball (MLB) is a professional baseball organization and the oldest major professional sports league in the world.[A] As of 2022, a total of 30 teams play in Major League Baseball—15 teams in the National League (NL) and 15 in the American League (AL)—with 29 in the United States and 1 in Canada.
It was in 1876 that the NL and AL were founded. After signing the National Agreement in 1903, the two leagues collaborated but remained different organizations until 2000, when they united into a single entity headed by the Commissioner of Baseball. MLB’s main office is in Manhattan’s Midtown.
In 1869, the Cincinnati Red Stockings became the first all-professional baseball club. Previously, some teams had paid players in secret. Early professional baseball was marked by fierce rivalry between leagues and by players who frequently changed teams or leagues.
Before 1920, home runs were infrequent because of the dead-ball era. The Black Sox Scandal, a plot to rig the 1919 World Series, did not affect professional baseball in the United States.
The 1920s saw a surge in popularity for the sport, which was able to weather the Great Depression and World War II. Baseball’s color barrier was broken by Jackie Robinson shortly after World War II.
