Ja’Wuan James Contract, Salary and Net Worth

After the Denver Broncos placed offensive tackle Ja’Wuan James on the non-football injury (NFI) list and dismissed him last month, James filed a grievance against the franchise on Monday, asking for $15 million.

A source verified that on Monday, James agreed to a two-year contract with the Baltimore Ravens worth up to $9 million with $500,000 guaranteed. The agreement with the Ravens is contingent on the player passing a physical, as reported first by ESPN.

After James, 29, tore his Achilles tendon during an early May offsite practice, the Broncos placed him on the reserve/NFI list, giving them the option of whether or not to pay his contract. On May 14, the Broncos cut James loose after deciding not to pay his $10 million 2021 salary.

For the 2022 season, James would like to make an additional $5 million, bringing his total salary demands to $10 million. He claims the injury “was sustained in the course and scope of his football training,” according to him

The league published a letter after James’ injury, using his unique situation to make the point that injuries sustained by players while working out on their own are not football injuries and are therefore not covered by standard contract guarantees.

The NFLPA criticized the NFL’s memo in an email to players, saying things like, “It was gutless to use a player’s terrible injury as a fear tactic to get you to come running back to (voluntary offseason workouts).”

James signed a four-year, $51 million contract with the Broncos in March 2019, but he only played 63 offensive snaps in three games over two years. As a result of his knee injury, he decided not to play in 2020 and his contract was extended by one year. In 2019, he earned $17 million.
