Keegan Lee Akin is a Major League Baseball pitcher for the Baltimore Orioles in the United States (MLB). In 2020, he made his MLB debut. Akin went to Midland, Michigan’s Bullock Creek High School and played college baseball at Western Michigan University.
In 2014, he spent the summer with the Chillicothe Paints of the Prospect League. He was a member of the Bourne Braves of the Cape Cod Baseball League in the summer of 2015.
He was selected in the second round of the 2016 Major League Baseball draft by the Baltimore Orioles. Akin made his professional debut with the Aberdeen IronBirds where he spent the entire 2016 season, pitching 26 innings with a 1.04 ERA.
He pitched for the Frederick Keys in 2017, going 7–8 with a 4.14 ERA in 21 starts, and the Bowie Baysox in 2018, going 14–7 with a 3.27 ERA in 25 starts. He pitched 112.1 innings for the Norfolk Tides in 2019, finishing 6–7 with a 4.73 ERA and 131 strikeouts. In the 2019 season, Akin was added to the Orioles’ 40–man roster.
On August 8, 2020, Akin was promoted to the big leagues. On August 14, he made his major league debut against the Washington Nationals. Akin went 1-2 with a 4.56 ERA with 35 strikeouts in 8 games and 25.2 innings pitched in his first MLB season.
Akin struggled mightily the following season, going 2-10 with a 6.63 ERA in 24 outings for Baltimore. His season came to an end on September 24, when he was forced to sit out the rest of the year due to a left adductor strain that necessitated abdominal surgery.
