A professional American football team, the New York Jets are situated in the New York metropolitan area. The Jets are a team in the American Football Conference East division of the National Football League. As a founding member of the American Football League, the team was established in 1959 under the name Titans of New York (AFL).
When the AFL and NFL merged in 1970, the franchise then joined the NFL. The team started competing at the Polo Grounds in 1960. The current name was chosen in 1963 under new management, and the team relocated to Shea Stadium in 1964 before moving to the Meadowlands Sports Complex in 1984.
In 1968, the Jets made it to the postseason for the first time. They then participated in Super Bowl III, where they defeated the Baltimore Colts to become the first AFL team to triumph over an NFL team in a World Championship Game between the AFL and NFL.
The Jets have made 13 postseason appearances and four AFC Championship Game appearances since 1968. The Jets, along with the New Orleans Saints, are the only two NFL teams to have won their lone Super Bowl appearance. They are also one of four teams to never have won the AFC championship.
