For his high school baseball team, Gomes attended Miami Southridge High School in Miami, Florida.



At the University of Tennessee, he played college baseball for the Tennessee Volunteers in the Southeastern Conference of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

He played every infield position except shortstop while at Tennessee. J. P. Arencibia’s backup catcher during the 2013 season.



He was named an NCAA Division I Freshman All-American after his freshman year at Tennessee.

A member of the 2007 Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape Cod Baseball League, he returned in 2008 to play for the league’s Chatham A’s after a year away.

The Boston Red Sox selected Gomes in the 39th round of the 2008 MLB Draft, but he declined to sign with the team.

To continue his college career after two seasons with the Volunteers, Gomes transferred to Barry University, where he played for the Buccaneers in the Southeastern Conference.

He had 92 RBI and 172 total bases, both school records. In addition, he was named to the All-South regional team and was recognized as the All-South player of the year and an All-American.

Gomes was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the tenth round of the 2009 MLB Draft, and he signed a contract with the team.
