Sandoval attended Mission Viejo High School in Mission Viejo, California, where he played baseball. He finished his senior year 9–3 with a 0.97 ERA.

Prior to changing his pledge, he had previously committed to playing collegiate baseball at Vanderbilt University. However, he is now committed to the University of Southern California.

The Houston Astros picked Sandoval in the eleventh round of the 2015 Major League Baseball draft.
