Otto Lopez is now a member of the Toronto Blue Jays of Major League Baseball’s (MLB), the major baseball league in the United States.
Lopez is a Dominican Republic native. He was reared in Montreal for many years when his family relocated to Canada, where he obtained Canadian citizenship when he was a child as a result of his father’s employment as a teacher.
On July 4, 2016, López signed as an international free agent with the Toronto Blue Jays. He appeared in 51 games with the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League Blue Jays in 2017, hitting.275 with one home run and 15 runs batted in (RBI).
During the 2018 season, López split time between the Rookie Advanced Bluefield Blue Jays and the Short Season-A Vancouver Canadians.
He appeared in 58 games, batting.308 with three home runs, 28 RBI, and 14 stolen bases. In 2019, he appeared in 108 games for the Class-A Lansing Lugnuts, hitting.324 with five home runs, 50 RBIs and 20 stolen bases in his first full season in minor league baseball.
López was added to the Blue Jays’ 40-man roster on November 20, 2020, to keep him out of the Rule 5 draft. During the offseason, he returned to the Leones, appearing in 18 games and batting.254.
Lopez made his Major League Baseball debut on August 17, 2021, against the Washington Nationals, striking out in his only at-bat.
