After high school, he enrolled at the University of Arkansas, where he committed to playing college baseball for the Arkansas Razorbacks baseball team in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division.

During the 2010 MLB draft, the Detroit Tigers drafted him in the second round (68th overall) of the draft. He signed with the Tigers and received a signing bonus of $1.1 million.

Drew was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays team in July  2014. He was with the Rays till January 2017 when they traded him to the Seattle Mariners. In December that same year, the Chicago Cubs and Drew agreed on a two-year contract worth $10 million.

The following year in November, the Cubs traded him to the Texas Rangers team. He was with the Cubs till March 19, 2022, when the Chicago Cubs signed him on another contract worth $4.25 million for the 2022 baseball season.
