In his junior year, he returned to the team with a fastball that reached 79 mph (127 km/h).

In 2007, he enrolled at Baker University, where he was a member of the Baker Wildcats of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.

In 2008, he transferred to the University of Arkansas however, he did not play baseball with the Razorbacks.

He tried out for the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) Arkansas Razorbacks baseball club but was denied. He started lifting weights.

Treinen took part in a baseball training camp taught by Don Czyz, a retired Minor League Baseball pitcher, over the Christmas holiday.

Ritchie Price, the head coach of the South Dakota State Jackrabbits baseball team, was introduced to Treinen by Czyz.

Treinen joined the Jackrabbits at South Dakota State University to continue his college baseball career. Due to NCAA transfer restrictions, he was forced to sit out in 2009.

His fastball averaged 87 to 88 miles per hour (140–142 kilometers per hour) by the time he was allowed to pitch for the Jackrabbits.

Treinen was drafted in the 23rd round of the 2010 MLB draft by the Miami Marlins. Despite Treinen’s willingness to sign, an MRI revealed shoulder irritation, and the Marlins backed out of the deal.
