In Livingston, New Jersey, Schwindel attended Livingston High School. From 2011 to 2013, he attended St. John’s University and played collegiate baseball for the St. John’s Red Storm.

In 2011, he played for the Riverhead Tomcats of the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League, and in 2012, he played for the Keene Swamp Bats of the New England Collegiate Baseball League. Schwindel was drafted in the 18th round of the 2013 MLB Draft by the Kansas City Royals.
