Smith began his career as a minor leaguer. Back in 2018, there wasn’t a lot of buzz around him.
A year into his minor league career in 2019, he tallied 130 strikeouts. He made 23 starts and had a 3.15 ERA in that time (117 total innings).
He played for the St. Lucie Mets, then Binghamton in Double-A. From July on, he pitched six complete games with an earned run average of 3.45, allowing just three runs or less in all but one.

Smith and his colleagues at the University of Georgia played three games every weekend and a few midweek games throughout the season. A pitcher’s timetable in college does not let them develop their own practices.
Every Friday, a new starter will take the field. Saturday starters are in the same boat. Because they have the time, college teams practice on days when they don’t have a game.
