Edwin Orlando Diaz Laboy (born March 22, 1994) is a Puerto Rican Major League Baseball pitcher for the New York Mets (MLB). He made his major league debut with the Seattle Mariners in June 2016, and he played for them from 2016 to 2018.

Diaz shattered the Mariners’ record for straight strikeouts and was named the team’s closer just two months after making his MLB debut.

In 2018, he led the American League with 57 saves, was an All-Star and was voted AL Reliever of the Year. After the season, he was traded to the Mets by the Mariners.

Diaz makes three pitches. His most often used pitch is a powerful four-seam fastball that has averaged 97.7 mph in his first three MLB seasons.

His other pitches are a slider that travels at an average speed of 88.2 miles per hour (141.9 km/h) and a change-up that travels at an average speed of 92 miles per hour (148 km/h).

In his MLB career, Diaz has been a strikeout pitcher, with 14.21 strikeouts per 9 innings pitched through the 2018 season.

During the off-season, Diaz spends time in his hometown of Daguao in the Naguabo Municipality of Puerto Rico, where the majority of his family resides.

As part of his Edwin Diaz Baseball Academy, Diaz has held baseball clinics for youngsters in his community. These seminars have been attended by Robinson Canó and Martn Maldonado.
