Ian’s non-professional career as a baseball player started in high school. He played for the Mt. Lebanon High School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He also played college baseball for the Cincinnati Bearcats at the University of Cincinnati. He played collegiate summer baseball for the Harwich Mariners of the Cape Cod Baseball League before completing University.
After being considered one of the top prospects for the 2015 MLB draft, the Chicago Cubs drafted him in the first round of the draft. Ian agreed to play for the Cubs and signed with them. The Cubs assigned him to the Eugene Emeralds of the Class A-Short Season Northwest League to begin his professional career.
That same season, he was promoted to the South Bend Cubs of the Class A Midwest League. Ian played for Myrtle Beach Pelicans of the Class A-Advanced Carolina League for the 2016 baseball season.
Ian spent the 2017 season with the Iowa Cubs of the Class AAA Pacific Coast League. He was finally promoted to the major leagues in May of that year. He made his MLB debut that very day for the Cubs.
