Roberts played collegiate baseball for Tennessee Technological University after graduating from White County High School in Sparta, Tennessee.
He finished 6–1 with a 2.41 ERA and 14 saves in 71 innings pitched as a junior at Tennessee Tech in 2018.
He was drafted in the fourth round of the 2018 Major League Baseball draft by the Chicago Cubs after the season ended.
Roberts joined the Cubs and pitched for the Eugene Emeralds, where he had a 5.40 ERA in 15 innings. He started the year with the South Bend Cubs before being promoted to the Myrtle Beach Pelicans in April.
Roberts went 4–5 with a 2.59 ERA, 13 saves, and 54 strikeouts in 59 bullpen innings between the two clubs.
Due to the cancellation of the season due to the COVID-19 epidemic, he did not play a minor league game in 2020.
