Juan Lagares is a Dominican professional baseball center fielder for the Los Angeles Angels of Major League Baseball (MLB). He played for the New York Mets from 2013 to 2020. Known for his defensive prowess, he won the National League Gold Glove Award in 2014.
A non-drafted free agent, Lagares signed with the New York Mets on May 5, 2006. In 2009, the team shifted Lagares from the shortstop position to the outfield. In 2006, he was assigned to the Double-A Mets, where he hit.255/.339/.412 with 18 extra-base hits, 33 runs batted in, and 12 stolen bases in 57 games.
During his time in Single-A Savannah in 2007, Lagares hit.210/.262/.317 with 20 extra-base hits, 16 RBI, and 11 home runs. His 2008 debut with Savannah was delayed due to an arm problem.
Lagares was sent to Brooklyn in the middle of August after 46 games with Savannah. He had a batting average of.253/.284/.352 with three home runs and 24 RBI in 65 games.
While playing for Savannah in 2009, Lagares suffered a wrist injury that ended his season early. After a stint with the GCL Mets, he returned in September.
With 14 RBI and 10 stolen bases, he hit.266/.297/.323 in 53 games. After the 2009 season, he was a member of the Dominican Professional Baseball League’s guilds Cibaeas (LIDOM).
