Some difficult decisions regarding position groups must be made as the Kansas City Royals close off spring training and prepare for the 2022 regular season.

The pitching rotation is one of those groups, with numerous players vying for a limited number of starting five places.

The team announced its first four starters for the season on Sunday. Zack Greinke, Brad Keller, Kris Bubic, and Carlos Hernandez will take the mound for the Royals in their season-opening series against the Cleveland Guardians.

This leaves one spot open for a few pitchers, including Brady Singer, Daniel Lynch, Jackson Kowar, and even Jonathan Heasley, who all have a shot to make the rotation. This puts Kansas City in a difficult position.

Whether or if manager Mike Matheny has already settled on a fifth starter, things are still up in the air.

Lynch discussed his thoughts (via Bally Sports Kansas City and the Royals) on breaking camp with the big-league club and his role after a difficult start against the Seattle Mariners on Sunday.

“I try not to be concerned,” Lynch remarked. “I feel like I’ve accomplished everything I could.” I believe I threw the ball quite well.

I felt like I was well-prepared and had completed all of my tasks; the rest was just not up to me. Obviously, I want that, but as I previously stated, the rest is beyond my control.

Lynch has had an intriguing past year, as he is less than a year off from making his Major League Baseball debut.

He showed major potential in a few games throughout the year, but his 5.69 ERA and 1.632 WHIP in 68 innings pitched in 15 starts overall showed how much space he still has to grow.

Lynch has some of the best pure “stuff” in the organization, but his control and consistency are lacking.

Lynch appeared in three games as a starter. He pitched 12-1/3 innings in those games, allowing 17 hits and six earned runs. Lynch struck out seven batters while walking two. His ERA was 1.541.
