José Ricardo Álvarez, professionally called only José Alvarez happens to be one of the professional baseball pitchers with the San Francisco Giants baseball team of the Major League Baseball(MLB).

José began professional baseball by playing for the Boston Red Sox team. The Red Sox signed him as an international free agent in July 2005. In 2006, he made his professional debut playing for the DSL Red Sox of the Dominican Summer League.

José was with the Greenville Drive of the Class A South Atlantic League during the 2008 baseball season and in November 2009, the Red Sox traded him to the Florida Marlins baseball team. He played for the Marlins from 2009 till the end of the 2012 baseball season when they released him.

After he was released, the Detroit Tigers selected him and signed a minor league with him as a free agent in November 2012. He was invited to the Detroits spring training as a non-roster free agent the following year.

He made his MLB debut with the Detroit Tigers in June 2013. He was traded on March 21, 2014, to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. He played for the Angels till 2018 when they also traded him to the Philadelphia Phillies.

Two years after being with the Phillies, José signed a one-year contract with the San Francisco Giants in March 2021.
