Johnson made the decision to forfeit his remaining eligibility and enter the 2015 NFL Draft public on December 28, 2014.  He participated in a few combine workouts while at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis before suffering a hamstring injury.

Johnson was traded to the Houston Texans on August 8, 2019, in exchange for a conditional 2020 fourth-round pick, which, if Johnson plays in 10 games for the Texans, can advance to the third round.

Johnson was taken by the Cleveland Browns with the 77th overall pick in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft. Johnson was selected in 2015 as the sixth running back overall.

He joined the Miami Dolphins practice squad on October 26, 2021.

Johnson ran for a career-high 107 yards and two touchdowns on December 19, 2021, in his first home game with the Dolphins’ 31-24 victory over the New York Jets and he was added to the Dolphins’ active roster the following day.

On Monday, Johnson and the Bills reached a one-year contract agreement, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Instead of signing J.D. McKissic in free agency, the Bills chose to sign Johnson, who played a crucial role for the Dolphins late in the previous season.
