Cortland, Darin Ruf is a first baseman and outfielder in Major League Baseball for the San Francisco Giants. Ruf attended Westside High School in Omaha, Nebraska.

He went on to Creighton University, where he excelled in baseball and was awarded the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Player of the Year in 2007.

He was selected in the 20th round of the 2009 Major League Baseball draft by the Philadelphia Phillies. He batted for a good batting average in the minors at first, but in 2011 he paired it with power stats to become one of the Phillies’ top prospects.

In 2012, he made his big league debut. In 2013, he divided his time between Triple-A and the Philadelphia Phillies in the main leagues.

He was in a competition for a bench place in 2014, but he injured his oblique and went on the disabled list before the season began.

He stayed with the Phillies for two more seasons, but his major league career came to an end in 2016. He was moved to the Los Angeles Dodgers, but he did not appear in any games before his contract was sold to the Korea Baseball Organization’s Samsung Lions (KBO).

Ruf played three seasons in South Korea, leading the KBO in runs batted in 2017. He returned to the United States and signed with the San Francisco Giants, where he won a major league roster position after two more good seasons at the plate.
