Thomas James Murphy Jr. is an American professional baseball catcher for the Seattle Mariners of Major League Baseball (MLB). He previously played for the Colorado Rockies. Prior to playing professionally, Murphy played college baseball for the University at Buffalo.

During his high school years, Murphy was a member of the Paul V. Moore High School baseball team in Central Square, New York. In his senior year, he batted.510 and was named the All-Central New York (CNY) and CNY Athlete of the Year recipient.

A number of colleges were interested in recruiting Murphy while he was a high school senior. After much deliberation, Murphy decided to attend the University of Buffalo to play baseball.

He participated in the New York Collegiate Baseball Season’s summer league with the Oneonta Outlaws in 2010 (Oneonta is now a part of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League).

The Mid-American Conference Baseball Player of the Year award was given to him in 2011 after he led the conference in hits with 384.
