Treinen was drafted in the seventh round of the 2011 MLB draft by the Oakland Athletics, and he made his MLB debut in 2014.

The COVID-19 pandemic delayed the start of the 2020 season until late July, but Treinen pitched in 27 games for the Dodgers (3rd in the NL), with a 3–3 record with one save and a 3.86 ERA.

He threw one inning in the Wild Card series, two and a third innings in the 2020 NLDS, five and a third innings in the 2020 NLCS, and two and a third innings in the 2020 World Series, allowing six total runs and earning a save in Game 5 of the World Series. In six games, the Dodgers won the World Series.

Treinen was re-signed by the Dodgers after the season for a two-year, $17.5 million deal that included a team option for a third year.

Treinen had a 1.99 ERA, a 6–5 record, seven saves, 85 strikeouts, and an MLB-leading 32 holds in 72 games for the Dodgers in 2021.

He threw 1+23 scoreless innings in the Wild Card Game, one run on one hit in 3+13 innings with five strikeouts in the 2021 NLDS, and one run on three hits in 3+23 innings in the 2021 NLCS.
