Espinal was born and raised in the Dominican Republic until the age of thirteen when he relocated to the United States.

He went to Lyman High School in Longwood, Florida, for four years, where he graduated.  He subsequently relocated to New York, where he completed his secondary education at Penn Foster High School.



The Florida native attended Seminole State Collegiate before transferring to Miami Dade College on a baseball scholarship in 2016. He played college baseball for the Hurricanes that year.

Steve Pearce and financial considerations were received in exchange for Espinal when he was moved to the Toronto Blue Jays on June 28, 2018.

While playing for the Dunedin Blue Jays and New Hampshire Fisher Cats, Espinal hit.297/.356/.444 with 10 home runs and 60 RBI between the two clubs and the Salem Red Sox.

Espinal was a member of the 2018 All-Star Futures Game. Following the 2018 season, he joined the Surprise Saguaros of the Arizona Fall League (AFL), where he played for them.
