When he was younger, Wittgren lived in Torrance, California, but he grew up in Lafayette, Indiana, where he attended McCutcheon High School and competed in baseball, basketball, and tennis for the school.

At the conclusion of the 2013 season, MiLB.com awarded him the Minor League Relief Pitcher of the Year. On April 19, 2016, Wittgren was promoted to the Major Leagues by the Miami Marlins.
