When he was younger, Wittgren lived in Torrance, California, but he grew up in Lafayette, Indiana, where he attended McCutcheon High School and competed in baseball, basketball, and tennis for the school.

From 2011 to 2012, Wittgren competed for Purdue University in collegiate baseball after one season at Parkland College.  He was Purdue’s closer for two seasons, compiling a 2.54 ERA, 22 saves, and 94 strikeouts in 92 innings of work.

In 2011, he participated in the Cape Cod Baseball League’s Hyannis Harbor Hawks Summer Collegiate Baseball Program. During the 2012 MLB draft, the Miami Marlins selected Wittgren in round nine.

Jamestown Jammers and Greensboro Grasshoppers were the two teams he played for in his first professional season. At the conclusion of the 2013 season, awarded him the Minor League Relief Pitcher of the Year. On April 19, 2016, Wittgren was promoted to the Major Leagues by the Miami Marlins.

Bryce Harper’s grand slam came as a result of a walk he issued to the only hitter he faced in his Major League debut, Anthony Rendon. As of the 29th day of January 2019, the Marlins designated him for assignment.
