Romero is presently throwing live batting practice in Clearwater, Florida, according to MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki.

Romero, along with Sam Coonrod and Kent Emmanuel, is the closest to starting a rehab assignment among the three Phillies pitchers now on the 60-day injured list.

Romero, 25, made his bullpen debut during the truncated 2020 season, according to Zolecki, and is expected to return in “early June or later.”

Over 10 2/3 innings pitched, his ERA rose to 7.59, but he did hold the opposition scoreless in eight of his 12 appearances that season. He pitched in 11 games with the Phillies before suffering a left elbow sprain and was placed on the disabled list.

Romero, a former fourth-round pick of the Phillies in 2016, was placed as high as No. 5 on Baseball America’s best prospect list for the Phillies in 2019.

In terms of the other injured pitchers, Coonrod is practicing catch from short distances, according to Zolecki. With a strained right shoulder, he’s on the injured list. Emanuel (left elbow impingement) may be able to throw live BP in the near future.

Ryan Sherriff, a left-handed pitcher with biceps tendinitis, is also catching from short distances.

He’s on the 10-day injured list for now, and there’s no word on when he’ll be able to pitch again. When the Phillies require a roster place to open up, Sherriff might be sent to the 60-day injured list.

Romero, Coonrod, Emanuel, and Sherriff all have minor league options left, so it’s not a given that they’ll be in the majors once they’ve fully recovered.
