Crawford is the brother-in-law of Olympic gymnast Jamie Dantzscher. Amy Crawford is married to Gerrit Cole, a pitcher. Jennifer Pippin, his sister-in-law, died after an asthma attack in 2017.

Crawford studied physiological sciences at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He was a UCLA Bruins baseball player from 2006 to 2008, and he helped lead the club to the NCAA Regionals three years in a row, the first time in school history.

Crawford was selected MVP of the squad in 2006 and 2007, and he was chosen to the All-Pac-10 Conference team in 2007. In the summer of 2007, he was a member of the Cape Cod Baseball League’s Orleans Cardinals. Prior to attending UCLA, he played for the Mankato MoonDogs in the Northwoods League in 2005.

He was a member of the US national squad that won the 2006 International University Sports Federation (FISU) World Championship.
