He chose the Mets over the University of Florida, which he had committed to.

The Gulf Coast Mets were Szapucki’s first professional team that season. He began the 2016 season with the Kingsport Mets before being promoted to the Brooklyn Cyclones halfway through the year.

He went 1-3 with a 2.63 ERA in 21 games (18 starts) with the three organizations, striking out 72 batters in 61+23 innings.

Following the 2019 season, Szapucki was signed to the Mets’ 40–man roster. Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, the minor league season was canceled in 2020, and he did not play in any minor league games.
