Garrett traded his red jersey for a blue one when the Royals acquired him from Cincinnati on Wednesday in exchange for left-handed starter Mike Minor and monetary considerations.

The signing was part of a hectic day for the Royals, who went on to sign veteran right-hander Zack Greinke to a one-year, $13 million contract.

Garrett went to the Reds’ complex in Goodyear, Ariz., after learning of his trade early Wednesday morning to say farewell to the team that drafted him in the 22nd round of the 2011 Draft.

After that, he drove the 25 minutes north to meet his new one.

“I’ve heard nothing but good things about the Royals from previous players and coaches,” Garrett said. “They stated it’s a fantastic organization to work for.” That’s something I’m looking forward to. I have a lot to offer the squad.”

Garrett was a significant part of the Reds’ bullpen for the past five seasons, and his trade provides the Royals a power lefty to add to their high-leverage reliever mix.

He had a 6.04 ERA in 63 appearances in 2021, but he was one of the best setup men in the National League in 2019 and 2020, with a 3.03 ERA and 104 strikeouts in 74 1/3 innings.

J.J. Picollo, the Royals’ general manager, said, “We had aspirations to address our bullpen from the very beginning of the offseason.”

“Back in October, we had our sights on Amir. It just took some time to get it sorted out. He’s a left-handed power pitcher with a lot of experience.
