Despite being selected in the 26th round of the 2013 Major League Baseball draft by the New York Yankees, he opted to enroll at Stanford University rather than sign a contract.



Quantrill was one of the best available players when the 2016 Major League Baseball draft began. The San Diego Padres chose him with the eighth overall selection. Quantrill was acquired by the Padres and assigned to the Arizona Padres.

On May 1, 2019, Quantrill made his major league debut with the Padres, pitching 5+23 innings while giving up two runs. On May 25, at Toronto, he earned his first victory in a major league game.

He was given the chance to choose the El Paso Chihuahuas on May 26. In 2020, Quantrill appeared in 10 games for the Padres and went 2-0.

To acquire Mike Clevinger, Greg Allen, Matt Waldron, Austin Hedges, Josh Naylor, and the minor leaguers Gabriel Arias, Owen Miller, and Joey Cantillo from the Cleveland Indians, the Padres traded Quantrill to them on August 31, 2020.
