Who Is Carlos Carrasco?
Carlos Luis Carrasco is a Venezuelan-born Major League Baseball pitcher for the New York Mets. In 2009, he made his MLB debut with the Cleveland Indians.
He throws and bats right-handed, standing 6 feet 4 inches tall and weighing 224 pounds.
Carrasco was born in the Venezuelan city of Barquisimeto in 1987. He began playing baseball at the age of ten, first as a third baseman.
At the age of 16, he was spotted by a baseball scout in Venezuela and threw for Sal Agostinelli, the Philadelphia Phillies’ international scouting director, showcasing a 91 mph (146 km/h) fastball.
Carrasco learned to throw left-handed at an early age in addition to his natural right-handed delivery, but he does not consider himself to be ambidextrous.
Carrasco recounted several unique incidents during his early years in the United States in a Players’ Tribune story.
He ate Domino’s Pizza every day for 90 days during his first spring training because “that was the only thing I knew how to order.”
For being their “best customer,” Domino’s gave him a month of free pizza. He went on to say that in his first few years in the United States, he did very little outside of sports, including not conversing with his teammates.
“I couldn’t because I didn’t know how not because I didn’t want to.” He committed his energies to study English after being traded to the Indians. He became a US citizen in August 2016.
Carrasco and his wife, Karelis, have five children. Carrasco and his four-year-old daughter Camila visited youngsters in a hospital in 2010, and Camila was motivated to start cutting her hair with scissors to give to cancer kids.
Carrasco is active in community development and charity work, donating hundreds of thousands of dollars, time, and supplies to groups in his home country of Venezuela, as well as Colombia, the United States, Africa, and other countries.
The Roberto Clemente Award, given yearly to an MLB player who “best symbolizes the game of baseball, sportsmanship, community involvement, and the individual’s contribution to his club,” was given to him in 2019.
