Kyle Hendricks played baseball non professionally when he attended Capistrano Valley High School located in Mission Viejo in California. After high school, the Los Angeles Dodgers selected him in the 39th round of the 2008 MLB draft, but he did not sign with them and instead chose to play college baseball for the Dartmouth Big Green baseball team at Dartmouth College.

When he graduated from college in 2011, the Texas Rangers selected him in the eighth round of the 2011 MLB draft. He signed with the Rangers this time and kick-started his professional career by playing with the Spokane Indians of the Class A-Short Season Northwest League.

The Rangers traded him to the Chicago Cubs in 2013. Kyle spent the 2013 baseball season playing for the Tennessee Smokies of the Class AA Southern League. At the end of the 2013 baseball season, Kyle was named the minor league pitcher of the year by the Cubs.

Kyle made his MLB debut in July 2014 for the Chicago Cubs when they played against the Cincinnati Reds.
