Detroit Lions is a professional football team in Detroit America. It was established in 1930; making it one of the early NFL franchises. The team started as Portsmouth Spartans from Portsmouth, Ohio.

Due to financial struggles, they relocated to their home in 1934 and took on the name Detroit Lions because the city’s baseball franchise was Tigers. The team plays its home game at Ford Field and Downtown Detroit.

  • Detroit Lions is the only oldest team to not appear in the Super Bowl.
  • Their colors are Honolulu blue and silver
  • The team has retired several jerseys such as 7, 22, 37, 56, 85.
  • Although the team’s name is a result of the city’s baseball franchise’s name Tiger, the 2nd owner wanted them to be seen as the Kings of the NFL just as the lion is the king of the jungle.
  • Every Thanksgiving, the Lions play a match that started in 1934.
  • Soul singer Marvin Gaye considered playing for the Lions but gained weight so was cut off.
  • Detroit Lions’ all-time record is at the start of their 2017 season.
  • Chuck Hughes happens to be the only player from Detroit Lions and NFL to die on the field of play.
