In 2007, he recorded 88 tackles and 11 sacks. He has 79 tackles and five sacks as a junior in 2006.

Armstead played three seasons at the University of Southern California, starting 17 games and amassing 59 tackles. However, due to an initially unknown ailment, USC’s medical department failed to approve him to play in 2011.

He then sued the institution, alleging that team physicians gave him painkillers (Toradol), which resulted in a heart attack and jeopardized his future earning potential. In the 2012 NFL Draft, he went undrafted.
