Abreu has received a Rawlings Gold Glove Award and a Silver Slugger Award and is a two-time All-Star. He has twice led the league in games played, doubles, and triples in a single season.

He had two seasons in which he hit thirty home runs and stole thirty bases, making him one of only thirteen players in MLB history to do so twice. Abreu had the most doubles (565), walks (1,456), and outfield assists (136) among active ballplayers in 2014, was fifth in runs scored (1,441) and stolen bases (400), seventh in extra-base hits (911) and on-base percentage (.396), and tenth in runs batted in (1,363).

Along with Barry Bonds, Ty Cobb, Tris Speaker, Craig Biggio, Honus Wagner, and Paul Molitor, he is one of just seven players in baseball history to hit at least 900 extra-base hits and steal at least  400 bases. Five of them have been inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, with Bonds on the ballot.
