Australian boxer Johnny Famechon competed at featherweight. Famechon was the seventh person to be awarded to Legend status in 2012 after being inducted into the Australian National Boxing Hall of Fame’s Moderns category in 2003. On March 28, 1945, he was born in Paris, France. On August 4, 2022, he passed away.

Famechon attended the technical school in Essendon. He earned a reputation for being a talented boxer whose defense was his strength over the course of his 20-year professional boxing career. He has a 56-win, 6-draw, and 5-loss record for his career. In 1964, he defeated Les Dunn to win the Victorian featherweight championship, and in 1967, after defeating the Scot John O’Brien, he became the Commonwealth featherweight champion.

On January 21, 1969, at London’s Albert Hall, he fought Cuban José Legrá on points to win the Lineal and WBC featherweight titles. In a contentious points decision, Famechon defeated Fighting Harada of Japan to retain his WBC featherweight belt. Six months later, Famechon and Harada fought again for the world championship, with Famechon coming out on top by stopping Harada in the fifteenth round.

On May 9, 1970, in Rome, he faced Mexican Vicente Saldivar to defend his WBC title; following a close points decision loss, he shortly announced his retirement. He never engaged in amateur combat and received all of his professional training from Ambrose Palmer.

Johnny Famechon was married with two kids. His wife is called Elise (née Alves) Famechon. They got married at St Brigid’s Church in Mordialloc in 1970 and were together till Johnny died.
