Johnny Famechon

Johnny Famechon AM, an Australian boxer, participated in the featherweight division. Famechon was inducted into the Australian National Boxing Hall of Fame’s Moderns category in 2003 and was named as the eighth member to receive Legend status in 2012. Over the course of his 20-year professional boxing career, he solidified a solid reputation as a gifted fighter whose strength was defense.

His entire record is composed of 56 wins, 6 ties, and 5 losses. He won the Victorian featherweight title in 1964 by defeating Les Dunn, and the Commonwealth featherweight title in 1967 by defeating the Scotsman John O’Brien. He defeated Cuban José Legrá on points on January 21, 1969, at London’s Albert Hall to claim the Lineal and WBC featherweight titles.

Famechon defeated Fighting Harada of Japan in a razor-thin points decision to keep the WBC featherweight title. A world championship match between Famechon and Harada was scheduled six months later; Famechon won by stopping Harada in the sixteenth round. To defend his WBC championship on May 9, 1970, in Rome, he faced Mexican Vicente Saldivar; after a tight points decision loss, he soon announced his retirement. He never took part in amateur fights and obtained all of his professional training from Ambrose Palmer.
