Johnny Famechon was an Australian featherweight boxer. After being elected into the Australian Boxing Hall of Fame in 2003, Famechon’s position as a legend was bestowed upon him a decade later, in 2012.

Having been born in France in 1945, Jean-Pierre Famechon emigrated to Australia with his family when he was five years old.

56 victories, six ties, and five losses in more than 20 years of professional boxing. A disputed points decision victory by Famechon in the first defense of his WBC featherweight title against Japan’s Fighting Harada was followed by a knockout victory six months later.



In May 1970, he was defeated by Mexican Vicente Saldivar on points in Rome, and he resigned shortly thereafter at the age of 24. A leading Australian rules footballer and a professional prizefighter, Ambrose Palmer, trained Famechon, who never fought as an amateur.

Famechon was struck by a car in Sydney in 1991, resulting in a stroke and a brain injury. This year’s Queen’s birthday honors included his induction into the Order of Australia.
