Kwasi Kwarteng is a well-known member of the British Conservative Party and has held the position of Secretary of State for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy. He was born on May 26, 1975, and is currently 47 years old.

He was Secretary of State for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy from 2021 to 2022 before serving as Chancellor of the Exchequer under Liz Truss from September to October of that year.

Before running for office as an MP, he worked as a financial analyst and a columnist for The Daily Telegraph. Kwarteng was named the Department for Exiting the European Union’s Under-Secretary of State in November 2018.

Kwarteng was promoted to the position of Minister of State for Business, Energy, and Clean Growth in July 2019 when Boris Johnson was chosen as the new prime minister. This duty included attending cabinet meetings. Kwarteng received a promotion to Business Secretary in January 2021.

When Johnson announced his resignation in 2022, Kwarteng supported Liz Truss’s bid to become the Conservative Party’s leader. Following the selection of Truss as Prime Minister, Kwarteng was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer.

On September 23, Kwarteng released a “mini-budget” that featured several tax cuts, which drew heavy criticism and momentarily caused the value of sterling relative to the US dollar to reach an all-time low.

Kwarteng was dismissed as Chancellor on October 14 after just 38 days in office. He had the second-shortest tenure of any post-war chancellor behind Iain Macleod, who passed away while in office. Kwarteng was succeeded by Jeremy Hunt.
