In spite of his renown for playing a thug, he would often proclaim that his true loves in life were the fine arts, particularly poetry, painting, and opera.

From a young age, Sorvino was drawn to the stage, and he attended the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York, where he fell in love with the art form and became a professional actor.

Broadway saw him in “Bajour,” and cinema audiences saw him in Carl Reiner’s “Where’s Poppa?,” both of which came out a year apart.

Regardless of the medium, Sorvino’s 6-foot-4 frame had an impression. “The Panic in Needle Park,” “The Gambler,” “Oh, God!” and William Friedkin’s bank robbery comedy “The Brink’s Job” were among of his 1970s credits. He also worked with Al Pacino, James Caan, and others in the 1970s.

Sorvino had a starring role in John G. Avildsen’s “Rocky” sequel, “Slow Dancing in the Big City,” in which he was paired with professional ballerina Anne Ditchburn.
