Valdez has pitched in 15 games this season, nine of which have started with a clean inning.
Valdez has been outstanding when starting an inning this season, but his results have been less consistent when he has been called upon to enter in the middle of one with runners on base.
Valdez has gotten out of trouble on three previous times when he entered with only one runner on base, but in his three outings with multiple runners on base, he’s allowed six of those seven inherited runners to score.
His prior start against the Atlanta Braves earlier this week was a good example of this. The bases were loaded and no one was out when Valdez was put in.
Before striking out the side, he promptly gave up a bases-loaded triple. If Valdez had stranded the runner at third, the triple would have been harmless.
Valdez had been placed in a difficult situation, as seen by his cautious approach to the first batter he faced.
With all five pitches to Cavan Biggio, he relied solely on his dependable changeup, which he used to try to paint the corners. Valdez didn’t receive the call on a few pitches close to the edge, resulting in a walk.
