The Chiefs had not won a Super Bowl since Super Bowl IV, and they had never won an NFL championship after joining the league in the 1970 AFL–NFL merger. Kansas City’s quarterback Patrick Mahomes led the squad to a 12–4 regular-season record and their third Super Bowl participation. The 49ers finished the season with a 13–3 record and progressed to their eighth Super Bowl appearance overall, thanks to the rise of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
