This year’s No. 29-ranked player Steve Johnson was knocked out by Fritz after he was given a wildcard to play in the ATP 250 tournament at Memphis.

As a result of his semifinal victory over Riardas Berankis, which made him the second-fastest American to reach an ATP final, he became the youngest American to do it since Michael Chang in 1988.

John Isner is the only American to reach an ATP final faster than him. Kei Nishikori, a three-time defending champion and world-ranked player, defeated Fritz in the final. Fritz reached the quarterfinals of his first career ATP 500 event in Acapulco in February, breaking into the top 100 for the first time.

When Roger Federer beat Fritz in Stuttgart, it was the peak of his grass-court season. Towards the conclusion of the summer, he reached a career-high of No. 53 in the rankings.

Fritz lost in five sets against Jack Sock at the US Open, the second time this year he faced him in the opening round of a major.
