After winning the Junior US Open in September of that year, Fritz became professional. At the age of 17, he became the ninth player to win back-to-back Challenger Tour titles, quickly moving up the ATP rankings from the 600s to the top 250.

Bernard Tomic, Tomá Berdych, Richard Gasquet, Juan Martin del Potro, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic are among the other players to have achieved that accomplishment.

This was Fritz’s first tournament in 2016 and he made it all the way through to a final once again, this time defeating top-100 player Dudi Sela in Happy Valley.

For his first Grand Slam event main draw appearance, he made it through qualifying for Australian Open Qualifying, where he lost in the first round against fellow American Jack Sock in five sets.
