Is Trevor Richards Good?
Richards has a 3.86 ERA, a.093 WHIP, and a 3.22 FIP, with a 196/.241/.373 batting line against him. So far in 2021, Trevor Richards has pitched fourteen innings in the major leagues and made one appearance with Milwaukee.
When you look at the data, Richards appears to be average to below average. Richards has a 4.39 ERA, 1.385 WHIP, and 4.31 FIP during his career.
These figures are tainted by an appallingly truncated 2020, which Richards has at least partially recovered from.
Richard is still getting used to his new role as a big league reliever. He pitched largely as a starter throughout his first two seasons in the majors.
During the catastrophic year of 2020, he alternated between starting and stopping. This season, he’s excelled in the role of reliever.
It’s a role that Richards says he enjoys. According to David Stearns, he’ll play this position for the Brewers.
The Crew should benefit from Richards’ material as a distraction. He might be useful in the middle innings as a reliever or as a setup man for late-inning veterans Devin Williams and Josh Hader.
Richards is a dynamic player that could fit well at this location. He’s done a little bit of everything in his brief professional career, including game closing.
Richards’ arsenal consists of three pitches: a four-seam fastball, a curve, and a change-up. He pitches the fastball approximately half of the time, the curve about 20% of the time, and the change-up about 30% of the time.
His strongest pitch is undoubtedly the change-up. While it doesn’t have the same bilateral movement as a Williams Airbender, it does have a lot of horizontal movement and great drop.
His fastball has good movement as well. Richards gets batters to chase and strike out because of the movement on these pitches plus the fact that he delivers on the edge of the strike zone.
Richards has a strikeout rate of 31.5 percent and is averaging 11 strikeouts per nine innings this season. When Richards is struck, though, he is struck hard.
He’s a flyball pitcher (25.6 percent), with 44 percent of his pitches hitting the batter’s eye.
