At a press conference, Stockton Unified School District (SUSD) Superintendent John Ramirez Jr. claimed the student had been stabbed numerous times. The young woman was brought to a hospital, where she died later.

The school district had previously stated that the attack was not random and that a “trespasser” had driven up and targeted the pupil.

Police are investigating the incident, according to a district spokesperson, and have classified it as a random attack.

The suspect drove to the school’s front parking lot, parked, walked over to the student, and stabbed her, according to a news release from the Stockton Police Department.

A school district police officer swiftly apprehended the culprit, identified as 52-year-old Anthony Gray.

“The fact that the individual was caught so quickly merely proves that there were adults around and they were readily available,” Ramirez added.
