Wallace was born in Chicago, Illinois, to CBS 60 Minutes correspondent Mike Wallace and Norma Kaphan. Wallace is Jewish, as were both of his parents.
Because he was born on Columbus Day, he was given the name Christopher. He has an older brother, Peter (1942-1962), who died at the age of 19 in a mountain climbing accident.
His parents split when he was a year old, and he grew up with his mother and stepfather, CBS News President Bill Leonard.
Leonard offered him his first taste of political journalism by recruiting him as Walter Cronkite’s aide at the 1964 Republican National Convention.
Wallace did not have a relationship with his father Mike until he was 14 years old. Wallace was educated at the Hotchkiss School and Harvard College.
He began his career as an on-air news reporter for WHRB, Harvard’s student radio station. He was held by Cambridge officers during the 1969 student occupation of University Hall, and he signed off a broadcast from Cambridge City Jail with “This is Chris Wallace from WHRB News reporting from Middlesex County Jail in custody.”
