Lewis Hamilton is a British racing driver currently competing in Formula One for Mercedes. When Hamilton started racing karts in 1993, he soon won races and cadet class titles.

At the age of ten, he won the British cadet karting championship two years later, becoming the youngest driver ever to do so.

It was during the Autosport Awards in 2011 that Hamilton approached McLaren Formula One team chief Ron Dennis to ask for an autograph “Hello there. Lewis Hamilton is my name. One day, I hope to be racing your cars, having won the British Championship.”

Denny penned the following message to Hamilton: “Phone me in nine years, we can figure something out then.”

When Hamilton was 12, Ladbrokes bet that he’d win a Formula One race before he was 23, while another company predicted that he’d win the World Drivers’ Championship before he was 25, both at odds of 40/1 and 150/1, respectively.

McLaren’s driver development program contacted Hamilton in 1998 after his second Super One series and British championship victories. A future Formula One seat was included in the contract, making Hamilton the youngest driver to secure a contract that later resulted in a Formula One driving at the time.
