Rafael Nadal is a Spanish professional tennis player, currently ranked world No. 4 in singles by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP).

Despite the fact that he was also playing football at the time, Rafael Nadal won the Spanish and European titles for his age group in tennis when he was just 12 years old.

In order to prevent Nadal’s academic performance from deteriorating to an unacceptable level, Nadal’s father forced him to choose between playing tennis and football.

When Nadal was only 14 years old, the Spanish Tennis Federation asked him to relocate from Mallorca to Barcelona so that he could continue his tennis training there.

This request was denied by his family, in part because they were concerned that their son’s education might suffer as a result, but also because Toni stated that “I don’t want to believe that in order to be a successful athlete, you have to move to the United States or some other country. You can accomplish it without leaving the house.”

Because of this decision, Nadal’s father was responsible for covering the expenditures rather than the federation, which meant that Nadal received less financial support. In an exhibition match played on clay courts in May of 2001, he prevailed over Pat Cash, a past champion of Grand Slam tournaments.
