American rapper and actor who shot to fame with the smash hit “Gangsta’s Paradise” in 1995 and went on to win a Grammy.

After being mockingly referred to as “Coolio Iglesias” (a play on Julio Iglesias’s name) during a school singing competition, he adopted the name as his stage name.



He was arrested for theft when he was 17 and spent many months in jail. Coolio was a firefighter and environmentalist in 1980s northern California before beginning his music career.

The rap trio WC, Sir Jinx, and DJ Crazy Toones were where his musical career began. He had a promising start in his profession, but a crack cocaine addiction derailed him.
